87 MERCEDES 300D TURBODIESEL
My daily driver: 3-liter 6-cyl turbodiesel, 224k, Montana car from day 1, powerful and quiet, driver air bag, cruise control, ABS, climate control, very rare remote keyless entry, power locks, power windows, power seats, Pioneer cd stereo system, Mercedes-tech leather seats, sunroof. Everything works on this car except the outdoor temperature readout, a/c, clock, and the rear window on the passenger side which is probably just a switch in the console. The a/c compressor was serviced and works but needs new seals so doesn't hold a charge.
Runs perfectly on straight vegetable oil (SVO) and has been tested for 20k miles – comes with 50 gallons of vegoil ($2/gal after that). Averages 25 mpg (1 tank of [bio]diesel will get you between 50 and 300 miles depending on length of trip), goes 80 mph with ease, runs cool. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it cross country as is. Very comfortable, safe, smooth shifting car. Doesn't burn oil or smoke (the drips in the photo above are not from this car). Starts every time on the first turn and has a 120v block heater. This 6-cylinder 3-liter engine is much quieter than the 5-cyl Mercedes engine and has much more power, almost as quiet as a gasoline engine. Very modern car for 1987.
Over $2k in new suspension alone (shocks, struts, control arms, coil springs, ball joints, steering damper, tie rods, more) from Tom’s Alignment. New Toyo top of the line touring radials. New battery, alternator, glow plugs. Has winter plug-in.
NADA HIGH BOOK $8450. SELLING FOR $6500 WITH THE $2000 SVO CONVERSION INSTALLED & TESTED. Selling because I can’t drive 4 veggie cars. This is a great opportunity to get into a nearly carbon neutral car that has been tested and had all the bugs worked out. I have over $8k into it just in parts and the purchase price of $3500. Yes, you can find another one easily in another state for under $4k, spend $1k to bring it home then easily put another $2-4k into it and still not have it converted to SVO. I have no hesitation about selling this car locally and seeing it around town for another 10 years!
